Preventing and Managing Oral Side Effects of Chemotherapy and Radiation

Treatments like chemo and radiation (especially to the head and neck) can lead to dry mouth, mouth sores, infections, and tooth decay. In this section, you will learn how to manage the top four side effects you may experience during your treatment.

Dry Mouth

Xerostomia

  • Sip water often, suck on ice chips
  • Use alcohol-free mouth rinses or saliva substitutes
  • Consider a humidifier in your room at night

Mouth Sores

Mucositis

  • Avoid spicy, crunchy, or acidic foods
  • Rinse with salt & baking soda solution
  • Talk to your care team about soothing prescription rinses

Tooth Decay

As well as gum disease

  • Use fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristle toothbrush
  • Avoid sugary snacks and drinks
  • Continue gentle brushing twice a day even if its uncomfortable

Infections

Be Alert

  • Be alert for white patches (thrush), swelling, or persistent pain.
  • Call your doctor or dentist at first sign of infection
